Salt Lake Boat Tour & Black Rock

I’ve lived in Salt Lake City/County area for a long time and never knew we could take a boat tour on the Great Salt Lake! I’m still in awe of all the fun things to do in Utah!!

We had our own Captain Ron as our tour guide. He’s a cool dude! He’s living his best life doing what he loves! It was a great reminder for us to live life to its fullest and have the fun of our lives!

I’ve seen the Kennecott Copper Smelter Stack many times from the freeway but seeing it from the lake was way cooler! It was built to disperse exhaust gases from the Kennecott Utah Copper smelter and burns 99.9% clean. It’s just 35 ft shorter than the Empire State Building and the second tallest stack in the nation.

I was a bit fascinated to learn that people Sail on the lake as well! I’m considering adding Sailing lessons to my 101 List. I immediately thought about the perfect outfit for sailing, gotta get me some boat shoes! hahaha!

The water was unusually choppy, we were told the lake is usually very calm. I loved the little waves and was pleasantly surprised that I wasn’t feeling motion sick at all, until the end of the tour I got a tiny upset stomach and headache. Next time I’ll try a motion sickness med to see if it helps.

We learned the lake is between 10-25ft deep, I thought it was much deeper than that!

Lots of good info available on the dock with details of Stansbury and Antelope Island. I’ve been to Antelope Island but I haven’t been to Stansbury Island, yet!

Captain Ron….’er, our tour guide, told us about Black Rock, it’s a natural icon formed tens of thousands years ago when a piece of the Oquirrh Mountains rolled off and into the water. It was a fun addition to our day to learn more about the Great Salt Lake and its fun history!

The rock is pretty massive with lots of little caves and crevices to explore, just be safe climbing as the exterior seems to be ‘crumbling’. It’s bigger than the pics show, imo. Once you get to the rock it doesn’t seem very ‘black’ anymore.

We had a great time on our Salt Lake Boat Tour and visiting the Black Rock! If you want to follow our midlife adventure, check out our Adventure Journal.

Until next time, my friend.
